UNSW Student Housing – Kensington Campus

Architects: Architectus

Builder: WATPAC Limited Construction

Watpac Construction has built UNSW student accommodation in year 2009, Innowood provide a wide variety of façade elements, supplied and installed InnoScreen,  InnoClad and Innoshade products.

Completed at the end of 2009 the UNSW Student Housing project designed and executed by this multi-award winning architecture practice forms the basis of intramural student “households” on the Kensington campus.
The buildings thermal mass is contained in the hollow core concrete slab floors and masonry walls.
The hollow cores of the floors, interconnected to the building’s exterior and interior provide cross ventilation, for comfortable temperatures without the use of air-conditioning.
The buildings perimeter walls, insulated on their external faces are clad a weatherproof skin, overlain with a thin layer of concrete polystyrene panels system or a sun-shading (rain-screen) skin of Innowood reconstituted wood-base composite facade-screen battens.
Innowood reconstituted wood-base composite facade-screen battens also used across balconies form outdoor shaded, ventilated, almost translucent private “rooms”.

The light almost translucent Innowood facade screens give the sense of privacy and intimacy to balcony “room” spaces beyond. A sun-shading and rain-screening skin of Innowood facade-screen reconstituted wood-base composite profiles protects the insulated thermal-mass walls. Sunhoods project shade across the windows and Innowood facade-screen profiles provide protection to the thermal mass walls.
